WHY DO I COLLECT?

Why do I collect? That's easy... because it's so much fun! Ever since I can remember I have been going to flea markets, antique shops, yard sales, you name it. Wherever I could find some sort of interesting treasure or cool piece of junk! I love driving around in search of new places or revisiting my favorite spots. I come from a family of collectors and have lived amongst antiques and collectibles my whole life. I have a passion for decorating especially with things that I find in my travels or even things found in the trash... which by the way can be some of the best stuff! But for those who share the same passion, I don't have to tell you... you all know what fun it is and how addicting it can be! Here I will share my collections, interesting finds, decorating tips, photos, projects, friends collections and thoughts and whatever else I may find along the way.

SOMETHING OLD, SOMETHING NEW

One of my favorite collections is my wedding cake topper collection. I started collecting them while I was searching for a top for my own wedding cake. At the time, I thought it would be cool to use a vintage topper. After months of flea marketing I wound up using one that a friend (you know who you are!) had given me even though it wasn't vintage. My favorites are old bisque and and chalkware toppers. My collection consists of toppers from the 1920's - 1960's. I've found that the most challenging to find are the military ones with the groom in uniform. I only have 2 in my collection as they sometimes can be quite pricey. While out garage sale shopping I came across one on a table filled with junk where the groom was in a Navy uniform. I asked the dealer how much it was and she said "just take it!" Can't get much better than that! Too bad these little treasures aren't used on many cakes these days. Maybe they will make a comeback!

  4. My friend has a collection of vintage wedding cake toppers. When her daughter was getting married she used them as centerpieces at the shower.

    1. Hi Susan! That's a cool idea! I'm sure it looked great! My collection was once used at a gallery opening where the art was all wedding themed... it was a lot of fun! Thanks for looking at my blog! Emily

  5. Hello, I have a question. I see that the cake toppers are similar to what my grandmother used to pour, cook and paint. Would there be any that have the signature Ruth Shippy on the bottom of them. I have seen her ceramic creations show up all over the US. Thank you. Ginger
